According to ancient Ethiopian legend, coffee was discovered over 1,000 years ago by a curious goatherd named Waca. He noticed his goats became unusually lively and energetic after eating the bright red berries of a certain tree. Intrigued, Waca tried the berries himself—and soon felt a powerful boost of energy. This humble discovery would go on to change the world.
In Ethiopian folklore, Waca is more than a goatherd—he is revered as the deity of coffee, the spirit who first shared its invigorating magic with humanity. From that moment, coffee became more than a drink; it became a source of vitality, connection, and joy for communities across Ethiopia and beyond.

At Waca in Mykonos, we carry this spirit forward. The goat in our logo is a tribute to that first spark of energy, that playful burst of life that coffee brings. And the name "Waca" honors the origin story—where it all began.
Today, every sip of coffee is a tribute to this rich heritage. It honors Waca’s legendary discovery and the deep, soulful bond Ethiopia holds with the bean that brings people together, energizes the spirit, and awakens the senses.

Meet the Founders of Waca Coffee
Waca Coffee was born from the shared vision of Ilias Pantelis and Aggeliki Monogiou—two passionate individuals who understand Mykonos from the inside out. Originally from Pyrgos Ilias, Ilias has spent the last decade living and working on the island, immersing himself in its fast-paced lifestyle and unique rhythm. Aggeliki, a true Mykonos local, brings deep-rooted knowledge of the island’s needs, especially when it comes to its hardworking community.
Together, they saw a clear gap in the market: accessible, affordable, high-quality food and coffee for the people who live and work in Mykonos year-round. In 2021, they launched Waca Coffee with a simple but powerful mission—to serve the island’s locals with the care and quality they deserve.
